Los Angeles, CA (December 4, 2023) –Rogue Machine Theatre kicks off their 2024 season with a thrilling new play by Juan José Alfonso. An unlikely encounter between two individuals sets in motion a story of redemption and an unexpected alliance that straddles two countries and two very different work cultures. Directed by multi-award winner Guillermo Cienfuegos, Middle of the World opens January 27, 2024 at the Matrix Theatre.

Victoria was an important person in Ecuador. Now broke, disgraced and separated from her son, she is determined to get back home and regain what she has lost. Glenn worked his way from low-income housing to the verge of closing the biggest deal of his impressive career in finance. But is business success what he’s really chasing? Middle of the World means you cannot be in two places at once. You must choose. And when you choose, it means giving something up. What are they willing to sacrifice? For power, for principles and for love? On a night in NYC, when Glenn steps into Victoria’s Uber, the course of both their lives will change in an instant.

Juan José Alfonso (Playwright) wrote his first play, An Educated Guess, based on his own experience as an immigrant to the United States. The play was developed at New York Theatre Workshop and Steppenwolf (produced by Definition Theatre Company). His second and third plays were developed in residency at the Geffen Playhouse’s Writers’ Room program, and Middle of the World was first produced at Boise Contemporary Theater in October of 2023. Juan is a television producer and has worked on over 25 shows, including the Emmy-winning American Crime from Academy Award winner John Ridley and Marvel’s Agent Carter; as well as documentaries like The Clemente Effect and L’Arbitrewinner of the United Nations prize at the New York Festivals in 2010. He helped to develop the limited series Gaslit, starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn; as well as the horror-comedy Shining Vale, with Courtney Cox and Greg Kinnear.

“The genesis of this story struck as I was thinking about the intimacy that can often occur when people from radically different walks of life come together in a moving room while stuck in traffic. How many stories have we heard about the Uber driver who used to be an engineer in Belarus, a surgeon in Cuba, or the CTO of Pfizer but now drives just for fun,” says playwright Juan José Alfonso. “The character of Victoria is based on an amalgamation of three well known Latina women who had to fight incredible odds in chauvinistic South American cultures to gain a voice in their own governments and eventually make it to the top. And yet in the US we have failed to elect a female president.

Guillermo Cienfuegos (Artistic Director & Director) serves as Artistic Director at Rogue Machine, along with Founding Artistic Director John Perrin Flynn. He directed the Rogue Machine productions of Heroes of the Fourth TurningThe Beautiful PeopleDisposable NecessitiesReady Steady Yeti Go and Dutch Masters, as well as the RMT video productions of Insulted: Belarus(sia) and Voices of the New Belarus. Cienfuegos won both the Ovation and Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards for Best Director for his production of Shakespeare’s Henry V at Pacific Resident Theatre. He has directed numerous productions at PRT, including Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, Pinter’s The Homecoming and Safe at Home: An Evening with Orson Bean. Los Angeles, CA (Revised November 30, 2023) – OBIE Award winning playwright Samuel D. Hunter’s A PERMANENT IMAGE opens at Pacific Resident Theatre on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

Those traditionally joyous and colorful holidays are approaching and members of an estranged family from a small town in Idaho gather to bury the family patriarch. Siblings Bo and Ally are stunned to see how their childhood home has been “decorated” for the occasion. When Mom delivers a surprising twist, we start to see a method behind this madness. A fusion between realism and the absurd, A Permanent Image is an intensive comedic and dramatic exploration of the distance families put between themselves, and what it takes to bring them back together.

Scott Jackson Terry Davis Dalia Vosylius photo by Alex Moy.jpgHunter’s plays have a recurring idea about the human experience and connection through love and isolation filtered through the perspective of various characters living in Idaho where Hunter was born and raised.

“I’m an admirer of Samuel D. Hunter’s work and thought how wonderful it would be to explore the tonal possibilities when dealing with serious subject matter that sneakily transitions from the real to the absurd. I love a challenge and if a project doesn’t frighten me then I feel it’s not worth getting involved. I’m thrilled to be frightened and to be directing this play at PRT,” says Andrew Weyman.

Samuel D. Hunter (Playwright) is the recipient of a 2014 MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship for his work as a playwright. His full-length plays include The Whale (Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, GLAAD Media Award, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle nominations for Best Play, Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actor), A Case for the Existence of God (New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play), A Bright New Boise (Obie Award, Drama Desk nomination for Best Play), Greater Clements (Drama Desk nomination for Best Play, Outer Critics Circle Honoree), Lewiston / Clarkston (Drama Desk nomination for Best Play), The Few, A Great WildernessRestPocatello, The Healing, and The Harvest, among others. In the film version of The Whale, directed by Darren Aronofsky, actor Brendan Fraser won the Academy Award, Critics’ Choice Award and SAG Award for Best Actor. Hunter  is the recipient of a 2012 Whiting Writers Award and an honorary doctorate from the University of Idaho. He is a member of New Dramatists and a current Resident Playwright at the Signature Theatre in New York City. He holds degrees in playwriting from NYU, The Iowa Playwrights Workshop, and Juilliard.

Andrew Weyman (Director) directed at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center for several seasons, helping playwrights develop their new works at National and International Playwrights Conferences. He won an Emmy for his direction on the NBC series Texas. Andrew followed his win with stints directing the series Santa Barbara and the family comedy My Two Dads, the latter starring Paul Reiser and Greg Evigan. He spent two years as director on the long-running sitcom Roseanne, and after leaving the show directed series such as Ellen, CybillBetteStill Standing and Two and a Half Men. In 2010 he began directing Accidentally on Purpose, starring Jenna Elfman and co-created by Two and a Half Men mastermind Chuck Lorre.

Simi Valley, CA – Kick off your holiday season with a twist of an old classic as the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center presents IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR from December 1 – December 23, 2023 at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, 3050 East Los Angeles Avenue in Simi Valley.

It is Christmas Eve, 1947 in the studio of radio studio WNBC in New York City and a major snowstorm has hit the Big Apple. None of the Broadway stars who were scheduled to perform WNBC’s annual live radio broadcast of “It’s A Wonderful Life” were able to get through the storm so the station’s General Manager has to scramble to gather a cast of anyone still left in the building – the copy boy, secretaries – even a nun soliciting donations for homeless orphans! During the broadcast, everything that could go wrong DOES! But in the end, this merry band of misfits delivers one of the funniest and most heartwarming renditions of the holiday classic ever to go out over the airwaves. Performed as a “live” radio broadcast complete with live foley sound effects, IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR is a hilariously fun way to celebrate the holidays with the entire family.

Adapted from both the original LUX Radio Theatre Broadcast script of “It’s A Wonderful Life” originally broadcast in 1947 and the original screenplay of the classic film, Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center’s original production of IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR is a must-see!

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR is written, directed and executive produced by Fred Helsel with Philip McBride as Associate Producer. With vocal direction by Lauren Josephs, costume design by Ariella Salinas Fiore, and lighting design by Seth Kamenow, IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR will feature scenic design by Fred Helsel and Orlando Montes with Ethan Strubbe as Sound Designer. Kimberly Kiley is Production Stage Manager assisted by Caitlyn Rose Massey as Assistant Stage Manager. Intimacy Director and Production Associate for IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR is Ariella Salinas Fiore.

Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center’s production of IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR features an ensemble cast with John Dantona as Franklin Cummings, Kathleen Silverman as Virginia Darwell, Kyle Cooknick as Gordon Fitzgerald, Michael German as Buddy Marshall, Amanda Greig as Sister Mary Benedict, Lauren Josephs as Maggie Jenkins, Philip McBride as Eugene Wallace, Jen Ridgway as Betty Parker, Sharon Gibson as Gladys Murphy, and Kyle Sanderson as Arthur Randolph. Swings for IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR include Caitlyn Rose Massey and Ariella Salinas Fiore.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – ON AIR will play December 1 through December 23, 2023 with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. There will be an additional Thursday performance on December 21 at 8 pm. Admission is $33 for Adults and $28 for Seniors and Students. Please note there is an additional $2 per ticket surcharge on all ticket sales both online or in person. Group rates are available — call the box office for details. Visit www.simi-arts.org or call (805) 583-7900. Easy, free parking is available in the adjacent lot of the theater, with additional street parking available on the neighboring streets.

John Lloyd Young, winner of the 2006 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for Jersey Boys, returns to Palm Springs with classic hits from mid-century, Broadway, and beyond. Altadena Music Theatre’s presentation of “Hair,” under the skillful guidance of Producer Sarah Azcarate and Director Oliver Azcarate, delivers a uniquely impressive experience that extends beyond the confines of the stage. Before delving into the performance, it’s worth acknowledging the meticulous attention to detail that enhanced the overall professionalism and enjoyment of the evening.

The strategic use of park space, coupled with convenient parking facilities, sets the stage for a seamless and accessible entrance to the venue. The pre-show ambiance is enriched by an immensely enjoyable selection of music, creating a pleasant atmosphere for the audience. The distribution of full-color programs by ushers upon arrival adds a touch of sophistication, while the provision of a comprehensive snack and drink bar, inclusive of souvenir items, further contributes to a well-rounded and enjoyable theater experience.

As the curtains rise, the production unfolds as a stellar performance from start to finish. While this production is not the edgiest version of the show, the production succeeds in maintaining a balance suitable for a family-focused audience. The energy of the show leans towards uplift and excitement, aligning with Altadena’s commitment to delivering not only quality theatre but also a quality experience for its patrons of all ages.

The ensemble, led by Daniel Hartman’s captivating portrayal of Claude, Steve Mazurek’s energetic Berger, and Sarah Azcarate’s nuanced Sheila, exhibits a Broadway-quality talent that stands out throughout the production. Noteworthy is Azcarate’s emotionally charged performance of “Easy To Be Hard,” a standout moment in the show.

The choreography by Melissa Schade and music direction by Chris Wade significantly contribute to the production’s energy and rhythm. Well-executed dance sequences serve as a visual feast, complementing the powerful themes of the musical. The supporting cast, a vibrant mix of local artists and performers, adds depth and diversity, showcasing the wealth of talent within the community. Special recognition is given to Michael Mullen’s terrific portrayal of Margaret Mead, a moment that successfully pushes boundaries and captures the spirit of “Hair.”

The decision to present “Hair” by Gerome Ragni and James Rado, with music by Galt Macdermot, is commendable, resonating strongly with timeless themes of freedom, self-discovery, and social consciousness. In a world marked by conflict, these themes take on added significance, and the musical arrangements, arranged with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Tams Witmark LLC, elevate the overall experience.

As a fellow theatre creator, I deeply appreciate the dedication displayed by the entire team. The synergy between cast and crew results in a production that not only entertains but also provokes thought on societal norms and individuality. Ms. Azcarate’s evident love and dedication to the art form shine through, polishing every aspect of the company and creating resonant art that rivals even the largest professional theaters in Los Angeles.

In conclusion, Altadena Music Theatre’s rendition of “Hair” becomes a celebration of artistic expression and a poignant reminder of the enduring relevance of its themes. This production stands as a testament to the thriving talent in the local theatre scene, and I eagerly anticipate the continued growth of everyone involved in future projects, committing to attending every show this remarkable company produces.

In a mythic Antarctica (but one resonant with our current climate crisis), two scientists study glaciers and whales. When a third phytoplankton scientist arrives — Tay, who identifies as nonbinary — Herman and Terra begin to confront their own ideas of gender and their control of the natural world. As things unravel for all three of them, a new world begins to take shape — one where gender, identity, religion, climate, and time itself become new, expansive, and free of human interference.

SOMETHING FUN WE CAN ALL EXHUME!

Put Some Poison In Your Day as the Morgan-Wixson Youth Theatre Dazzles in THE ADDAMS FAMILY !!

(Santa Monica, October 10, 2023) Inspired by the darkly comic genius of Charles Addams’ New Yorker cartoons and the subsequent 1960’s TV show, The ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL tangos onto the Morgan-Wixson Theatre’s Youth Educaon/Entertainment Series Mainstage in Santa Monica November 4 through 26. This wildly fun musical romp explores themes of family, relaonships, and celebrang individuality — while embracing the wackiness found in every family.

The producon features a 22-member all-youth cast, ranging in ages from 12 to 16. “A unique aspect of this producon is that we are not doing a ‘youth version’ of this show. Our enre team – especially these incredibly talented young arsts – are fully commied to telling the ‘real story’,” explained director Eve Keller. “We’re so proud of the ambious bar they’ve set and, at the same me, we are mindful of how important it is to balance their creavity with best theater pracces, which is why we brought on a professional inmacy director to consult with the teen actors. They were really recepve to this process, which helps model expectaons for them when they move on to other experiences in their arsc and educaonal lives,” she said.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY focuses on every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the seemingly most ‘normal’ member of her delighully deranged family, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. If that weren’t enough to test her dong, macabre father Gomez, Wednesday begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before– keep a secret from his beloved, brilliant wife Morcia, who has her own wicked, wicked ways. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s scarily “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

“I’m parcularly excited for THE ADDAMS FAMILY because of the incredible producon team, as well as the fantasc cast. I’m so excited for audiences to experience the humor, truth, and love that this show represents,” said Chase Klein (age 16), who plays Morcia. “The Morgan-Wixson has been a home to me for 3 years now because of the welcoming, loving, and close community. We have been hard at work these past months and have grown so close as a cast.”

For director Eve Keller, “I was originally drawn to the nostalgia I have for the characters and how the Addams’ world is so opposite of a typical world. I knew it would be a fun ride. However, working with these talented youth brings so much more to the experience! I have known and worked with many of them in previous shows and to watch their growth as performers is an honor. They are so dedicated to their cra and to this producon and to making it come alive in a rich way for everyone to enjoy!”

In addion to Keller as Director, Martha Thatcher serves as Music Director, Michael Marchak is Choreographer, and Cori Goldberg, Karin Klein and Evelyn Vizzi are producers. Lighng and Set design by William Wilday, Costume Design by Jill Serjeant with Inmacy Direcon by Ariella Salinas Fiore.

The cast includes: Joaquin Hosfeld as Gomez, Chase Klein as Morcia, Ellie Birdwell as Wednesday, Lily Moss as Pugsley, Maia Goldberg as Grandma, Sterling Inatsugu as Lurch, Mimi Vizzi as Alice, Rahland Keller as Mal, Charli Ausn as Lucas, Sahar Aguilar as Ancestor, Henry Anderson as Ancestor, Finnley Blaine as Pugsley U/S and Ancestor, Sarah Hajmomenian as Wednesday U/S and Ancestor, London Hartmann as Ancestor, Mia Negrete as Ancestor, Amelia Olson as Ancestor, Andy Rowles as Ancestor, Evan Simonvitz as Ancestor, Ella Temple as Morcia U/S and Ancestor, Anna Sllman as Alice U/S and Ancestor, and Aydin Washington as Ancestor.

The tech crew, stage manager, assistant stage managers as well as lights and sound operators are youth ranging in ages from 12 to 18. Monty Oxman (age 17) is the assistant to the director, Walden Sullivan (age 16) is the assistant to the musical director , and Ever Golden (age 15) is the Stage Manager.

Understudies for Morcia and Pugsley will perform 11/12 and 11/18. Understudies for Wednesday and Alice will perform 11/11 and 11/19.

2023 marks the fourth consecutive record-breaking year for anti-trans legislation in the United States — 583 bills in 49 states that seek to block trans people from receiving basic healthcare, education, legal recognition, and the right to publicly exist. There are also 36 national anti-trans bills. Nineteen transgender people have been killed in the United States so far this year.

With a commitment to center transgender and intersex voices, especially from the BIPOC community, the City of West Hollywood is co-sponsoring The Trans Diaries 2023, produced by the National Organization for Women Hollywood Chapter on Saturday November 11, and Sunday, November 12, at 7:30pm, in the City of West Hollywood City Council Chambers at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard, in West Hollywood. The performances are free and open to the public, but RSVP is required. For reservations, go totransdiaries2023.eventbrite.com.

The writers and performers returning to the stage following the 2022 sold-out run are Lindsey Deaton and Lee Te. They will be joined by newcomers Seth Gomez, Theo Tiedemann, and Kyler O’Neal.

Said Lindsey Deaton, Vice Chair, City of West Hollywood Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and Creator and Artistic Director of The Trans Diaries,“Amidst the societal challenges of waking up transgender, our trans community is being faced daily with legislated hate, discrimination, and forced extinction. Despite this, trans folx experience daily gender euphoria and trans joy. There are so many unique things that we get to see, feel, and share as trans people. We are blessed and special in so many ways. We also know we have families of choice and allies who love, affirm, and celebrate us and our humanity. This year’s production explores gratitude for our allies and their allyship, shares and celebrates our trans joy, and shares the uniqueness that makes trans people so magical.”

The City of West Hollywood has been a national leader in protecting the most marginalized members of the LGBTQ community and transgender youth and adults by providing innovative and compassionate policies to support and protect them, including programs for homeless trans people, gender neutral public bathrooms, and space for trans led organizations.
