In Arthur Miller’s 1968 tour de force masterwork THE PRICE, two brothers reunite in the attic of a New York brownstone to sort through their late father’s possessions. What begins as a long overdue reunion becomes an intense exploration comparing the price of professional success to the cost of personal integrity, as four indelible characters struggle to make sense of the past and create a future.

Richard Fancy, Jason Huber, Dana Dewes, Scott Jackson.jpegWritten late in Miller’s career, THE PRICE is considered to be one of his most compelling and personal plays – beautifully driven by Miller’s language, it is a searching, poignant and humorous examination of responsibility, memory, and the moral weight of compromise.

Miller often said that the purpose of theater is to reveal to spectators that the anxieties they think are private are in fact shared, “more human, less alone.” The Price is built to do just that: to have viewers recognize their own family resentments, compromises, and unfinished arguments. It grew directly out of Miller’s memories of the Great Depression and the way it shattered his own family’s finances, leaving him with a lifelong preoccupation about what people sacrifice in order to survive and succeed.

Arthur Miller (Playwright October 17, 1915 – February 10, 2005) was born in New York and studied at the University of Michigan. He received his first Pulitzer Prize for All My Sons when it opened on Broadway in 1947. Other career accolades include a Tony Award for Death of a Salesman, The Jerusalem Prize, and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize. Throughout his long career he wrote 37 plays, as well as numerous screenplays, such as “The Misfits,” (starring his wife Marilyn Monroe), radio plays, fiction, and non-fiction. Known for his political views and his stand before the House of Un-American Activities Committee, Miller is widely considered to be one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century.
