REVIEW: The Prom, SVCAC

by Annie Claire Hudson

Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center’s production of The Prom, a charming musical about love and community, is guaranteed to warm your heart. Packed with comedic gems and vocal powerhouses, this impressive cast kept me at the edge of my seat with every twist in the plot.

I personally love a musical that has characters from the theatre in the story. The show begins on Broadway with 4 actors who are in need of a boost to their image and careers. They decide to do a charitable act to get them back on the public’s good side. Suddenly their Broadway world collides with that of a small town in Indiana. Their mission? To help a lesbian high school student go to the prom. As you can imagine, chaos ensues… but by the end of the show you will be left with all the warm fuzzies inside.

Tommi Jo Monfold stands out as the lead, Emma Nolan. Tommi Jo took me on a journey through every high and low Emma experiences. Her voice soars on every song. Unruly Heart really shined with Tommi Jo’s emotional take and heartwarming moments from the ensemble.

Haley Wolff is perfectly cast as Alyssa Greene. She really captured Alyssa’s sweet demeanor, and scholarly air. The connection between her and Tommi Jo was believable and I couldn’t stop rooting for them!

Philip McBride gave comedic genius as Barry Glickman… and has some of my favorite costumes!

I couldn’t take my eyes off of Brent Ramirez as Trent Oliver. His talent lit up the stage. Love Thy Neighbor stands out as one of my favorite musical numbers, complete with lively choreography!

Réanna Morris is a knock out as Angie Dickinson! Her dancing was on point, and her Zazz was ZAZZ!

Michele McRae and John Dantona make a sweet and quirky Dee Dee Allen and Mr. Hawkins. Many shining musical moments!

The entire cast was so fun to watch. Overall an excellent production.

Catch The Prom Friday, Saturday, Sunday through October 1st! You won’t want to miss this one.
